Team Science Award

Tyler Mathis, Dr. Xuehang Wang and Matt Thompson from Vanderbilt University represented our FIRST EFRC in the Team Science completion. They delivered a great talk and won the Team Science Award from the Department of Energy.

First Book on MXenes

The first comprehensive book on MXenes, 2D Metal Carbides and Nitrides (MXenes): Structure, Properties and Applicationsis to be published this summer by Springer, co-edited by College of Engineering Distinguished University Professor Yury Gogotsi.

The book gathers all the origin material on MXene – the metallic, atomically thin two-dimensional materials discovered here at Drexel in 2011 – and summarizes research activity to date, both in the United States and in 50 countries throughout the world. Read the full press release here.

Award Winning DOE Video

The video directed and produced by MSE PhD students Simge Uzun and Bilen Akuzum with research stars Tyler Mathis and Dr. Xuehang Wang playing main characters got the award for the Best Cinematography!  Xuehang, Tyler and Prof. Gogotsi accepted the award plaque from Harriett Kung, Associate Director of the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences (DOE BES) sponsored a Life at the Frontiers of Energy Research Video Contest designed to educate, inspire, and entertain an intelligent but not expert audience about the extraordinary science, innovation and people in the EFRCs. The 46 EFRCs were challenged to highlight a scientific breakthrough, tell a story of a big idea, show collaboration in action, give a window into the life of a scientist or student, or illustrate the impact on society of an EFRC’s mission.  4 videos were selected as winners in different categories.  Professional cinematographic work of Bilen and Simge was recognized by a panel of judges from outside DOE.

Thanks to all who voted for the video on the DOE website.  You can now watch the video and learn more about MXenes and energy storage on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob1N_uI91j0

Ten at Ten People Award

Congratulations to our alum Michael Naguib (MSE PhD, 2014) who received a Ten at Ten People award from the DOE Under Secretary for Science Paul M. Dabbar. He is one of only 3 awardees to be recognized during celebration of 10 years of Energy Frontier Research Centers. Michael was recognized for his research on MXenes.

Congratulations to Natalia Noriega

Congratulations to undergraduate student, Natalia Noriega, for being accepted into the doctoral program at the University of Brighton, UK. She has been awarded the International Research Scholarship to cover full tuition fees for the duration of my PhD and will continue collaborations with Drexel.

Kanit Wins the Best Presentation Award

Congratulations to PhD Candidate, Kanit Hantanasirisakul, who won the Best Presentation award for his talk at the 2nd International Conference of the Materials Research Society of Thailand (MRS-Thailand)  in Pattaya.

Maria Lukatskaya joins faculty of ETH Zurich

Congratulations to former Drexel PhD student, Dr. Maria Lukatskaya on a faculty position at ETH Zurich. Maria graduated with a PhD degree in MSE from Drexel about 3 years ago and spent 2 years as a post-doc at Stanford University and about a year at SLAC. She will be joining ETH Zurich (ranked among top 5 technical universities in the world) at the end of the year.   Drexel MSE department produces outstanding PhDs!
Maria is the third alum from our group (after Yohan Dall’agnese and Babak Anasori) joining academia in 2019.
