• November 28, 2003: Prof. Gogotsi featured in Nature in an article
on opportunities in nanotechnology. This is the second time within the last two
months that Gogotsi's work has been featured in this prominent publication.
• November 5, 2003: A picture of Naturally Occurring Graphite Cones related to
paper authored by J.A. Jaszczak, G.W. Robinson, S. Dimovski, Y. Gogotsi
published in Carbon (vol. 41, pp. 2085-2092, 2003) was selected by the editors
to appear on the cover of next 15 issues of Carbon journal published by Elsevier
in 2004.
• October 26, 2003: Svetlana Dimovski received a $600 travel grant to attend
the NATO Carbon Advanced Research Workshop and Conference, held at Argonne
National Laboratory from October 19 to October 24, 2003. She presented a paper
entitled,"Low Temperature Synthesis of Graphite from Iron Carbide."
• October 20, 2003: Nevin Naguib received the American Vacuum Society (AVS)
Dorothy M. and Earl S. Hoffman Travel Grant. The grant provides $300 to attend
the AVS 50th International Symposium to be held in Baltimore, MD, November 2 -
7, 2003.
• October 3, 2003: An article about the Drexel Nanotechnology Institute written
by Katrin Cowan appeared in the October issue of Ceramic Bulletin. Since this
was the article for a publication of the American Ceramic Society, it primarily
covers DNI's activities in materials/ceramics area. Click here for link to full

• October 2, 2003: In the October 2 issue of Nature, the NSF-IGERT program and
the Drexel/UPenn IGERT are featured in an article on multidisciplinary
education. "Nature" interviewed IGERT fellow Nevin Naguib and PI Prof. Gogotsi.

• August 20, 2003: A microphotograph of naturally occurring carbon cones taken
by Svetlana Dimovski is one of ten semifinalists in the photography category.
The finalist winners will be anounced in the September 12th issue of Science.

• July 24, 2003: Students in Space: The A.J. Drexel Nanotechnology Institute,
Directed by Professor Gogotsi, sponsored the Drexel student project performed
this summer through NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program.
Several Drexel students had the opportunity to work on the production of
nano-scale polymer fibers in a reduced gravity environment, aboard NASA's

• July 18, 2003: Prof. Gogotsi has been named as one of eight Associate
Editors of a new journal to be published by the American Ceramic Society.
Starting in January 2004, The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) will publish
Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology. Each 96-page issue will have a topical
focus with four to five lead articles. One of Prof. Gogotsi responsibilities as
an Associate Editor will be to organize a special issue on Nanotechnology, to be
published next spring.
• July 9, 2003: Nanostructured Carbide-Derived Carbon (CDC) won R&D 100 Award
this year. These awards recognize the 100 most technologically significant new
products & processes of the year and are considered to be the most prestigious
honor in applied research world-wide. The entry was submitted from Dr.Gogotsi of
Drexel University, Dr. McNallan of the University of Illinois at Chicago and Dr.
Ali Erdemir of Argonne National Lab.
• May 27, 2003: GAANN (Graduate Assistantships in the Areas of National Need)
is offering graduate assistantship in the field of Nanotechnology. For details

• May 14, 2003: Nevin Naguib of Nanomaterials group along with Emily Ho have
won the second prize for submitting their full business plan to the 2003
Entrepreneurship Conference on May 14, 2003. The prize amount is $10,000, for
further development of their plan
• May 13, 2003: John Chmiola of Nanomaterials group has been awarded the
Joseph J. Weisser Memorial Scholarship. This award is given by ASM International
Liberty Bell Chapter and includes an amount of $1500.
• April 30, 2003: Vladislav Domnich received Roland B. Snow award from
the American Ceramic Society. This award is presented for the best ceramographic
work and consists of a monetary award and a Steuben glass artifact. The winning
entry was co-authored by Ethan Hackett and Prof. Gogotsi. For details, click

• April 22, 2003: Prof. Gogotsi received the 106 award at the Research Day
2003 ceremony for receiving more than 1 million dollars in research funding for
the year 2002.
• April 22, 2003: Beth Carroll of Nanomaterials group received the Best Poster
award at the Research Day 2003 in undergraduate category. The title of her
poster was "Tribological Behavior of Carbide-Derived Carbon Films". For photos

• April 21, 2003: Tom Juliano and Nevin Naguib, members of Nanomaterials
group have been selected to receive a fellowship to attend the 5th PACRIM
Meeting in Nagoya, Japan (Sept 29-Oct 2, 2003). Each awardee will receive up to
$1,800 to cover all travel expenses to Nagoya.
• April 21, 2003: Charles Avila of Nanomaterials group will be receiving Jack
Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship. This scholarship is given to thirty
undergraduate students every year. Charles would be receiving this award in a
ceremony in Washington D.C. in the month of July 2003.
• April 10, 2003: T. Juliano, V. Domnich, D. Ge, E. Hackett, Y. Gogotsi won
2nd place at American Society of Materials Liberty Bell Chapter, Willow Grove,
PA for their poster titled "Boron Carbide for Armor Applications: Indentation,
Raman, and TEM Studies".
• April 2, 2003: Nevin Naguib of Nanomaterials group along with Emily become
one of the five finalists in Business Concept Competition sponsored by the
Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology. Their concept paper was
entitled HY-NANO and they have been invited to attend the Entrepreneur
Conference scheduled for May 14, 2003, where they will be recognized with a $250
team award.

• Febraury 1 and 2, 2003: Prof. Gogotsi appeared on ABC Channel 6 News and WB17
News on Feb. 1 and 2 with comments on the loss of ceramic thermal protection
tiles from Columbia space shuttle. He also participated in Sunday Life show on
Channel 6 on February 2.
• January 1 , 2003: Dr. Vladislav Domnich of Nanomaterials group has been
promoted to Research Assistant Professor, effective January 1, 2003. He will
supervise Raman spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy and Nanoindentation
facilities, as well as lead research efforts of the group in the area of High
Pressure Surface Science. His research will focus on phase transformations in
materials under contact load and on developing/improving nanoscale
characterization techniques such as near-field Raman spectroscopy. In the
absence of Prof. Gogotsi, he will manage the Nanomaterials Group, sign
documents, organize group meetings and seminars.
