• December 2, 2002: NSF-IGERT Fellowships for Research in
Nanoscale Science and Engineering: NSF-sponsored fellowship program at Drexel
and UPenn begins this year.
• September 10, 2002: Prof Gogotsi was awarded the Kuczynski Award for his work
on the paper Graphite Polyhedral Crystals by the International Institute for the
Science of Sintering. He was also selected to become a full member of the IISS.
• August 7, 2002: Beth Carroll was awarded one of twelve ASM International
Foundation Scholarship that are given to students of the sophomore, junior, and
senior level who demonstrate academic and personal achievements and have an
interest in materials science and engineering.
• June 18, 2002: Svetlana Dimovski received The Dragomir Nikolitch Trust
graduate scholarship given by The Studenica Foundation. This scholarship is given
to students from the former Yugoslav nation who are persuing graduate degrees in
the United States. On average, only 4 to 5 students are awarded annually.
• May 27, 2002: Svetlana Dimovski received an Amelia Earhart Fellowship from
Zonta International. This award was established in 1938 in honor of Amelia
Earhart, famed pilot and member of Zonta International. The awards are granted
annually to women of any nationality, who are pursuing graduate degrees in
aerospace and related sciences and engineering. Last year 35 students were
awarded from 19 different countries. Only 13 of awardees were from the USA. Very
few Materials Engineering/Science students (2-3 per year) receive this award.
The award may be renewed for an additional year.
• May 13, 2002: Svetlana Dimovski received the Best Poster Award for her poster
Experimental and Theoretical Study of Graphitic Nano- and Micro-Structures
presented in the general student poster session at the Centennial 201st meeting
of The Electrochemical Society in Philadelphia. Her poster was the best among 50
posters presented by graduate students from all over the world.
• May 09, 2002: Numerous awards and grants were won by Dr. Gogotsi and the
NanoMaterials Group at the annual Drexel/MCP Hahnemann Research Day. Details of
the group's awards can be viewed here.
• April 19, 2002: Nevin Naguib won second place at the ASM - Liberty Bell
Chapter Poster Competition. She was also selected to receive the Dean's
Fellowship for 2002 from the Drexel College of Engineering, adding to her
already long list of academic accomplishments.
• April 3, 2002: Beth Carroll a BS/MS student in our group, received a Best
Poster award in the Undergraduate Materials Research Initiative (UMRI) poster
competition at the Spring 2002 Materials Research Society Meeting in San
Francisco. This is a very prestigious award that shows that our undergraduate
students are competitive on the national level.
• April 2, 2002: Prof. Yury Gogotsi, head of the Nano Materials Group, has been
selected as the year 2002 recipient of the International Union of Materials
Research Societies (IUMRS) Somiya Award for International Collaboration for his
work with Dr. Yoshimura of the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan on
"Hydrothermal synthesis of carbon coatings and nanotubes".
• March 27, 2002: Tom Juliano, our graduate student, has been awarded a National
Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship, which is a very
prestigious 3-year national fellowship. He also received Honorable Mention in
the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, which is considered a significant
academic achievement nationwide.
• February 20, 2002: Six NMG students, Beth Carroll, Svetlana Dimovski, Ethan
Hackett, Tom Juliano, Nevin Naguib and Daniel Penrose received COLLEGE OF
ENGINEERING AWARDS during the Honors Day.
• February 20, 2002: All three MEM students from the senior design team advised
by Y. Gogotsi received scholarships from the college on the Honors Day
