•  December 5, 2001: Beth Carroll, our undergraduate student, was awarded an UMRI AWARD FROM THE MATERIALS RESEARCH SOCIETY (MRS). This award will support her undergraduate research. She will be required to present her results at the 2002 Spring MRS meeting in San Francisco.

Svetlana Dimovski, our graduate student, was awarded THE MRS BEST POSTER AWARD. This is the third Best Poster award for Svetlana in 2001. For more infomation visit MRS Website.

•  November 14, 2001: Sascha Welz received THIRD PLACE in the INTERNATIONAL METALLOGRAPHIC COMPETITION (IMC) for his poster titled, "Transformation of Nanocrystalline Diamond to Graphite."

•  September 30, 2001: NMG students have been awarded prestigious fellowships from Drexel University. 

Nevin Naguib: KOERNER FELLOWSHIP.
Thomas Juliano: GEORGE HILL JR FELLOWSHIP
These fellowships will provide financial support for Nevin and Tomas for the entire Academic Year 2001-2002.

•  June 19, 2001: The work of Sascha Welz together with Daniel Ersoy, a former UIC student, titled "Conversion of Silicon Carbide to Diamond to Produce Dynamic Seals with Superior Properties" has been selected by the National Inventors Hall of Fame as a  WINNER of the 2001 COLLEGIATE INVENTORS COMPETITION.  The winning student team receives a $20,000 cash prize and a $2,000 gift certificate to www.hpshopping.com. In September 2001, winners and their advisors (Yury Gogotsi and Michael J. McNallan) will travel to Akron, Ohio as special guests of The National Inventors Hall of Fame. At that time, they will be given the opportunity to meet the inductees to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The Collegiate Inventors Competition winners will receive their awards at a special dinner given in their honor on Friday, September 14, 2001 as well as be showcased alongside inductees during the National Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, September 15.

•  June 19, 2001: Nevin Naguib has been named a NATIONAL COLLEGIATE AWARD WINNER in MATERIALS ENGINEERING. This prestigious honor, which only very few students are able to attain, is given by the United States Achievement Academy and is open to the US citizens. 

•  May 17, 2001: Prof. Yury Gogotsi's paper "Conversion of Silicon Carbide into Crystalline Diamond-structured Carbon at Ambient Pressure" has appeared in the NATURE magazine, vol. 411, 2001, pp. 283-287.

Nina Gonzalez, Nina Orlovskaya, and Yury Gogotsi, "Indentation Induced Deformation in LaCoO3 Perovskite" won 2nd PLACE in Undergraduate Category.

•  April 4, 2001: Chicago/Milwaukee Local Chapter of the American Ceramic Society Meeting, Argonne, IL

Sascha Welz, Yury Gogotsi, and Michael McNallan, "TEM study of diamond structures produced by high-temperature chlorination of SiC" won BEST POSTER AWARD

•  March, 2001: Vladislav Domnich has been included in WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICA'S UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES. Only 0.5% of the students in American universities and colleges are honored in Who's Who. This annual award is given to outstanding campus leaders for their scholastic and community achievement.
