Prof. Gogotsi Awarded Lee Hsun Award

Prof. Yury Gogotsi was awarded the Lee Hsun Award Lecture at the Institute of Metal Research (IMR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Nov. 5. The Lee Hsun Lecture Award is named after the former IMR Director H. Lee, who discovered hydrogen embrittlement in steels. According to Prof. Hui-Ming Chen, Editor in Chief of Materials for Energy Storage (Elsevier) and IMR Advanced Carbon Materials Division Director, this award “Honors scientists who have significant impact and made great contribution to the field of materials science and engineering both at home and abroad. It is aiming at continuously and regularly encouraging scientists with great influence on materials science and engineering to visit IMR to accomplish academic communication and cooperation, and promote the establishment of new subject areas.”

Boris wins Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Competition

Congratulations to Boris Dyatkin, who recently won the The Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Competition. He received this highly competitive award for his presentation titled: “Probing Supercapacitor Carbon-Electrolyte Structure and Ion Dynamics with Neutrons” at the DOE EFRC PI meeting in Washington, DC.  Boris gave an excellent talk on Monday. Here is what Dr. David Wesolowski, Director of FIRST EFRC said about his presentation:  “I would like to recognize Boris for his outstanding talk.  Already as a graduate student, his presentation showed a level of scientific insight and political astuteness that I am sure made many senior scientists envious.”  Congratulations once again!

Dr. Michael Naguib Abdelmalak Selected for Drexel’s “40 Under 40”

Dr. Michael Naguib Abdelmalak, currently at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NMG alum, has been selected for this year’s annual “40 Under 40” in Drexel Magazine, the magazine of Drexel University’s 149,000 alumni. Now in its fourth year, the “40 Under 40” program recognizes outstanding young alumni who are making a mark in their professions and community.  Congratulations to Michael!

NMG Alum Promoted to Full Professor

Congratulations to Dr. Volker Presser, former post-doctoral associate in the Nanomaterials Group, who was appointed as Full Professor and Head of Energy Materials at the Saarland University in Germany. He is also affiliated with INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials. It’s particularly impressive taking into account that Volker went from Assistant Professor to Full Professor in about two years, skipping the intermediate Associate Professor step. Congratulations once again to Volker!

Congratulations to Babak, whose science-as-art work attracted attention of International Innovation journal. An interview with Babak just appeared online and there will be an article featuring more images from Babak’s work soon. Read more here.
