January 17, 2006 - IGERT and NSF Graduate Research Fellow John Chmiola has been selected to receive a travel fellowship, supported by NSF, to attend the European Ceramic Society Meeting in Berlin, Germany from June 17-21, 2007. Chmiola, who is advised by Prof. Yury Gogotsi, will present a talk titled “Transforming Carbide Ceramics to Carbon: A Way to Advanced Supercapacitors” at the meeting in Berlin.

December 11, 2006 - A paper describing IGERT Fellow Jason Thompson's work on nanofluidics has been accepted to the Annals of the New York Academy of Science. The paper is titled "Lab-on-a-chip technologies for oral-based cancer screening and diagnostics: capabilities, issues, and prospects." In related news, Jason served this summer as a mentor to an REU student, Gloriell Cardona, from the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. Gloriell recently submitted a paper to the PennScience Journal of Undergraduate Research (under review) titled "A Study of the Use of Ferrofluid and Ferro-Wax as a Pumping and Valving Mechanism in a Microfluidic Device."

December 11, 2006 - The Materials Pennsylvania Coalition (MatPAC) is offering several courses for the winter term. Click here for more information.

December 11, 2006 - Several Drexel/Penn IGERT Fellows presented talks at the Materials Research Society’s Fall 2006 Meeting in Boston, MA, November 27 through December 1. Pictured at right are Maria Taku, Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering at Penn; Jessica Schiffman and Kris Behler, both of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Drexel. Maria presented a talk titled “Electronic Transport Measurements in Tin Oxide.” Jessica’s presentation was titled “Crosslinking chitosan nanofibers.” And Kris gave a talk titled “PVdF/MWCNT Electrospun Nanocomposite Fibers.”

November 30, 2006 - IGERT Fellow John Beausang recently received a travel award to attend a Biophysical Society Discussion on molecular motors in Asilomar, CA , to present a poster titled "Twirling of Actin by Myosins II, V, and VI."

November 20, 2006 - Prof. Yury Gogotsi will teach a course titled Nanostructured Carbon Materials in winter 2006, open to all IGERT Fellows. Click here to view the syllabus. Update as of December 11: this class will meet on Tuesdays, and not Wednesdays as indicated previously on the syllabus.

November 17, 2006 - IGERT fellows Tony Tuesca and Dan Hallinan presented talks at the 2006 annual meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in San Francisco, CA, November 12-17. Tony presented a talk titled "Nanoscale characterization and in vitro behavior of poly (methacrylic acid-g-ethylene glycol) as an oral delivery device for insulin." Dan presented a talk titled "Multicomponent Diffusion of Methanol and Water in Nafion®." He received a Schering-Plough Research Travel Grant to attend the meeting.

October 31, 2006 - Former IGERT Fellow Liz Hoffman, advisors Yury Gogotsi and Michel Barsoum, and colleagues at Drexel and the University of Brighton in the U.K. report work that may lead to significant improvements in the treatment of sepsis, a human immune response which causes around 1,500 worldwide deaths daily. Their article, entitled “Mesoporous Carbide-Derived Carbon with Porosity Tuned for Efficient Adsorption of Cytokines,” has been published online and will be opening the December issue of Biomaterials (v. 27, pp. 5755–5762, 2006). October 19, 2006 - IGERT Fellow Mike Birnkrant and others helped Drexel host nine 9-12 year olds for a presentation on nanotechnology and a tour of some research laboratories today.  The students, all home-schooled, have formed a team to participate in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge, an international annual event for which this year's theme is "Nano Quest: Exploring Existing Sciences at the Molecular Level."  Click here to view the photo album.

September 6, 2006 - IGERT and NSF Graduate Research Fellow Kris Behler and colleagues have published a paper in the Journal of Nanoparticle Research: K. Behler, S. Osswald, H. Ye, S. Dimovski and Y. Gogotsi. Effect of Thermal Treatment on the Structure of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes. Journal of Nanoparticle Research. Published online: 28 July 2006.

August 17, 2006 - IGERT and NSF Graduate Research Fellow John Chmiola is the lead author on a paper appearing in Science magazine. Click here to read more.
